Okay, this is a venting post, to get out some frustrations. As most of you know, we are moving. It is called a PCS move the military makes the soldier do after his term in a current base is up. We were lucky to get Alaska for the last six years. Our attempt at staying in Alaska in Ft Wainwright did not work out. Even though the orders were almost cut and the move was approved, other options were presented to us. Here is the beginning of our crap story:
1) Asked for Ft Wainwright in hopes of going to the K9 Unit, then retire and go guard or reserves in 2013. We are still home and don't have to travel after retirement. Kids all in their home town. Good plan.
2) Army convinces Wes that he should further his career and that the K9 Unit was not it. There was no room for advancement and he should go Drill Sgt. We decided, Okay not a bad idea. Kids are still young and will return to Alaska with a re-enlistment in 2013. No one gets left behind because of age. A little family adventure to Ft. Leonard Wood. (The only MP Drill Sgt program)
3)Orders are in for MO, being printed and someone calls in a request for Sgt Rath to train soldiers in CA. He has done a TDY there to train soldiers for war, and they want him back. Orders to MO are changed to CA without our permission or knowledge!
4) Half the people are screaming Drill Sergeant the others are screaming Training Officer...and NO ORDERS ARE BEING PRINTED!
I can go either place, I can make it work in either state. The family will be fine anywhere and Wes will be fine doing EITHER job. But make up your damn minds already!
If we go to CA, we have to call a hotel three months in advance to get a room to stay in, and time is running out to make this call. We will be staying in this room for several months until housing is available. So the hotel is booked because of the housing problem, and the housing is filled with a waiting list several months long. HELLO?! And they special requested a man that has a large family and can not give him a place to live. Not cool.
If we go to MO, the housing application can be faxed now. We get put on a waiting list and we are not even due to be there until September. Half the waiting is done while we are still in Alaska. He goes Drill for three years, re enlists for Alaska, we come home and he does a desk job for a while. When he retires it will be with 20+ years and he can sit on his butt if he wants (he won't).
Come on people, figure it out already. If it is not handled by the end of this week, Mrs. Sgt Rath is going to be making an appearance. Done it once, will do it again. Didn't like it the first time, they REALLY won't like it the second. It should not take an outsider to see the problems and have to come in and fix them. Politics are more important on this base that the actual job. Seriously, stop patting backs and get back down to taking care of your damn soldiers. ALL of them!!!
(I have several more vents on that politicking subject that would not be appropriate to print, having nothing to do with us personally, but still have to struggle through each one with my husband who is out to help his guys ONLY. Nothing is cut and dry in "Today's Army".)

Awwwwww Jenny, I hope they get it figured out soon so you can mentally plan and prepare. Frustrating when it seems that it should be easy and there is nothing you can do about it. Good Luck!
